Skin Lightening Therapy Q & A

What is IPL?

IPL is an in-office treatment that uses a special light to penetrate the lower layers of your skin, known as the dermis, to constrict blood vessels and reduce the appearance of pigmentation. The light stimulates the production of collagen, a protein used to make new skin, to replace your sun-damaged spots.

What can I expect during treatment with IPL?

Before treatment, Dr. Hassan places special eyewear over your eyes for protection. He then applies a cooling gel to the treatment area to reduce discomfort and help the laser wand glide over your skin.

After you’re ready, Dr. Hassan places the IPL over the treatment area and applies short pulses of light. The procedure time varies depending on treatment area; it takes a few minutes or up to an hour.

During treatment, you may feel a warm snap as the light pulse stimulates your skin, but any discomfort is fleeting. If necessary, however, Dr. Hassan applies ice packs after treatment to reduce swelling and pain.

For best results, you may need three to five treatments.

What happens after treatment with IPL?

There’s no need for downtime following an IPL treatment, and you can resume your usual activities immediately. However, Dr. Hassan recommends limiting your exposure to the sun as your skin heals, which takes about two weeks. After that, wear sunblock daily to enhance the effects of treatment.

Swelling and redness is a common side effect that usually goes away quickly.

You may start to notice improvements in your skin within a day or two. The full effects of IPL treatment, though, take about a week. With proper skin care practices, the results of IPL treatment may last for up to a year.

What does IPL treat?

Dr. Hassan uses IPL treatment for:

  • Sunspots, age spots, and liver spots
  • Redness
  • Uneven skin texture

As a tool that stimulates collagen production, IPL is also used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
